All current clinical practice guidelines list EVLA as the first choice treatment for varicose veins.

It requires a specialized surgical facility, ultrasound capability, laser equipment, and a high volume expert in the procedure. As such, it is not offered by many clinics in Canada. Excellence in this elegant procedure is what truly sets The Vein Treatment Centre apart. We do a very high volume of endovenous ablations and have cultivated a genuine expertise that allows us to get excellent results with minimal inconvenience to our patients.

What is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Endovenous laser ablation or EVLA is an in-office treatment using laser energy. The laser is delivered directly inside the vein to eliminate varicose saphenous veins and other large varicosities. Dr. Hill introduced EVLA to Canada in 2002 here at the Vein Treatment Centre. This treatment has since replaced surgery for most patients and is the first choice treatment for venous reflux around the world. The excellent long term results, ease of delivery, and minimal recovery make the EVLA the treatment against which all other treatments are measured.

Under ultrasound guidance and local anesthesia, doctors use a catheter to pass a laser fibre inside the vein. The application of laser energy causes the vein to close. With EVLA, there is no need for hospitalization, general anesthesia or stitches. Following the procedure, patients can walk out of the office and resume normal daily activities (except for really strenuous exercise).

Many patients choose endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins because of the short recovery and excellent long term results.

Why Choose Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Endovenous laser ablation is chosen by many patients because it offers effective treatment with minimal disruption to everyday routines.

What to Expect

Initial Consultation

Your visit begins with a consultation that includes a physical examination and a diagnostic ultrasound assessment. This helps your physician evaluate vein function and better understand the cause of your symptoms. Results are reviewed together, and next steps are explained clearly so you feel informed about what comes next.

Day of Treatment

Endovenous laser ablation is performed in our clinic and typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable, and ultrasound guidance allows the physician to treat the vein with precision. After the procedure, you are able to walk on your own and return home the same day.
First Few Days After Treatment
A compression pad and support stocking are applied after the procedure to support healing. It is normal to notice mild tenderness, firmness, or bruising during the first few days, with steady improvement over time. Gentle movement such as walking is encouraged, while more strenuous activity should be avoided as you recover.
1 to 2 Weeks After Treatment
As healing continues, short term side effects gradually fade. Comfort and mobility improve during this time, allowing most patients to return to their normal routine with greater ease.
Follow Up Care
Follow up ultrasound imaging is scheduled to assess how the treated vein has responded. This allows your physician to confirm treatment success and review progress. Any additional recommendations are discussed clearly so you understand the next steps in your care.
